Enabling the Female Gaze

What is the female gaze?

It is a feminist film theory that came into existence as a response after feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey coined the term 'male gaze' in 1975. Male Gaze refers to the gaze of a heterosexual consumer of a media along with the leading male character and the male director of the content.

The male gaze enabled the objectification of the female body, making it a prop to add glitz and glamour to a movie. In South Asian context, Bollywood movies would always have an item number (a song that doesn't have any relevance to the plot of the movie––it is only there for extra entertainment). Item numbers make sure that the movie is well received by the male audience.

My Pecha Kucha will explore the female gaze and the art that comes from it.
